For the past 40 years the effects of exposure to nature and forest experiences has been studied by medical and social scientists. Both anecdotal and scientific evidence has been generated in support of improved wellness for people connecting with nature.

Following many decades of research on the human-forest connection, and the discovery of multiple associated health benefits, Japan has continued to offer Shinrin-yoku a part of its national health care program. As the world health organization and CDC begin to look at social determinants of health and consider importance of preventative care, Forest Therapy may be an important consideration in response to the increase of stress related illnesses.
